This is probably no surprise, but my favorite time of day to go out with my camera is sunrise. It’s quieter and a more peaceful time to be out.
The trouble is, I’m not a morning person. Not even a little bit. I have to wake up at least an hour before I need to start getting ready to go, so I have that time to wake up.

Here are a few tips I have for helping me leave my warm bed and chase the sun.
- Get my clothes out the night before. If I have my clothes out, I’m more likely to go out. I also sleep in the base layer that I’m going to wear under my jeans and sweatshirt. The fewer clothes I have to take off in order to get dressed, the better.
- Check the weather. I want to make sure the clouds are going to be where I want them to be, and that it’s not supposed to be raining. I don’t want to get up if the sky isn’t going to look cool.
- Get all my camera gear together. It usually is all set and ready to go, but I like to double check that I have everything packed the night before. I also make sure my batteries are all charged.
- Plan where I’m going to go. I’ve got a few places that I tend to go to for sunrise and I usually pick one of those, however I need to get more locations figured out so I can change up the photos. I like to know where I’m going the night before, that way, I’m not scrambling trying to find a place and wind up missing sunrise.
What is your favorite time of day to go out with your camera? What is your routine for going out?
