Sunrise on Lake Superior

I grew up in Washburn, Wisconsin, and I still have a lot of ties to the area. And last week, we went up there for a few days to visit with a few friends and family. We were also in a wedding, so a lot of the time was devoted to that.

But I did have one day to photograph the sunrise, and I took advantage of it. I woke up early and went to the beach to watch the sun rise over Lake Superior. At least, that was the plan. It turned out to be a gray, overcast day instead of the bright sunny day that I was hoping for.

I was a little disappointed because this sailboat was docked in the middle of the bay and it would have looked stunning with the sun on the horizon. But I do like how it turned out with all the blues and grays of the sky and water.

A sailboat docked in the water.

After I accepted the lack of sun, I adjusted my focus to taking long exposure shots of the waves and rocks. I walked further down the beach and found a few sticking out of the water that would be perfect for what I wanted to do.

Overall, it wasn’t the sunrise I wanted, but I’m happy with the photos I was able to take. One day I hope to see the pinks, oranges, and reds over Lake Superior. I’ll have to try again in the fall or spring.
